Where to find the Central Newspaper Collection
At Central Library newspapers are stored on the large red shelves at the top of the escalators on the harbour side of Second Floor. The newspapers are arranged alphabetically within regional categories - Wellington community, New Zealand metropolitan, New Zealand weekly, New Zealand Provincial, Australian, British & Irish, and International.
Each newspaper has a current issue folder which holds the latest issues. Older copies of each paper are arranged in monthly or half-monthly folders underneath. Copies of most newspapers are held for three months.
Copies of the Dominion Post, Dominion, Evening Post and Sunday Star Times are held at the Second Floor desk for photocopying purposes.
The latest copies of Daily Telegraph, Guardian and Times are also held at the desk. ID is required while you look at these newspapers.
Back issues
Back issues of Wellington papers, Sunday Star Times, National Business Review, Truth and some other papers are available in hard copy. Ask at the Second Floor desk and a staff member will retrieve the requested newspaper for you.
To see if we hold the back issue you want, try a title browse search. Look at the right hand side of the screen for the word 'newspaper' in purple. When you locate the newspaper you want, click on the title and read the 'Holdings' information.
Many papers will say 'Latest 3 months. Irregular. Donation' - we may not have the edition you are after.
If we do not hold a paper copy, an online version may be available.
Newspapers on Microfilm
To access newspapers on microfilm, ask for the newspaper with the date (quoting year and month) at the Second Floor enquiries desk. The staff member will retrieve the requested microfilm and assist you with operating the microfilm readers on the Victoria street side of the enquiries desk. Please place the microfilm back in the correct box when you have finished viewing it and return it to the enquiries desk.
Articles can be printed from these papers at a charge of $0.50 per A4 copy and $1 per A3 copy.

Branch Newspaper Collection
All branches have copies of Dominion Post and their local community newspapers. For older copies please ask a staff member for assistance. Some branch libraries will also have recent newspapers of local interest, such as the South Pacific and Chinese papers held at Newtown and Chinese language newspapers at Johnsonville.
Newspapers online
Most New Zealand newspapers and many major overseas newspapers are available online via our Proquest databases. Titles include The Dominion Post, Sunday Star-Times, Sydney Morning Herald, New York Times and the Observer. Much of the material, particularly older articles, is not available for free on the newspapers' own websites.
Available on all computers in and outside of the library (library card details required):
- ProQuest Newspapers provides full articles from 14 major international papers
- ProQuest ANZ Newsstand provides full-text access to Fairfax newspapers such as Dominion Post, The Age, The Press and Sunday Star Times.
- EBSCO's Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre includes full articles from The New Zealand Herald, as well as the Fairfax titles Dominion Post, The Press and Sunday Star Times, amongst others.
- Index New Zealand (INNZ) is an index with abstracts from selected New Zealand newspapers and magazines. Developed by the National Library, it just covers New Zealand and the South Pacific topics. Since INNZ is just an index, you will have to get the articles themselves from our newspaper collection.

- Stuff - Another way to access New Zealand Newspaper articles, particularly the latest news.
- Papers Past - Provided by the National Library, Papers Past showcases selected 19th century New Zealand newspapers and periodicals. The site currently contains digital images of over 600,000 pages from 30 publications.
- Niupepa: Maori Newspapers Digital Collection - An electronic collection of over 17,000 pages taken from 34 separate periodicals. It is based on 'Niupepa 1842-1933', a microfiche collection produced by the Alexander Turnbull Library.
- Our Newspaper page links to most major New Zealand, Australian, British, North American and South Pacific newspapers online, plus some European, Middle Eastern, African and Asian titles.
Other newspaper sources in Wellington
- Try the National Library's Find a newspaper page if you are on a free internet PC or using a computer outside of the library. The National Library has extensive holdings of NZ, Pacific and Australian newspapers from the 19th century onwards.
- Many Embassies subscribe to newspapers from their country. Call up the relevant embassy or ask at the Second Floor desk for information on embassy newspapers.
