Joining the library
We have information on joining the library in:
Amharic, Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Dari, Farsi, Fijian, Gujarati, Hindi, Japanese, Khmer, Kiribati, Korean, Maori, Pashto, Russian, Samoan, Somali, Spanish, Tagalog, Taiwanese, Tokelau, Tongan and Vietnamese.
Some of these are pdf files - you can download Adobe Acrobat Reader to read a document, or ask your local library to print a copy for you. This page gives you the information in English.
Interpreting Service
Wellington City Council is trialling an interpretation service - translators are available for over 60 languages, including Somali, Khmer and Sign Language. This service is available at Central Library, and the branch libraries in Miramar, Newtown and Johnsonville. If you are interested in using an interpreter, please tell library staff and they will set up a three way conversation with an interpreter over the phone.
How can I join the library?
You must bring:
- Identification (passport, bank card, or student ID)
- A letter or account with your name and address. (Your bank will give you a printout with your address)
- The name and address of someone who does not live with you.
Now that you have your library card:
- Don't give your card to anyone else
- Do tell us if you change your address
- Do tell us if your card is lost or stolen.
What does it cost?
It is free to join and borrow books if you live in Wellington.

Everything must come back to the library before closing time by the due date.
Fines must be paid for late, lost or damaged items. Unpaid debts go to a debt collection agency.
Return items to the library you got them from or you will pay $1 for each item.
